MASTERY in 2007
WOW! August was an amazing month for The Mastery!! With 26 participants in the Calgary workshop, Larry, James and Christie had their hands full! And it was a powerful experience.
With all of that exciting momentum, we are gearing up for two more workshops this fall:
- Edmonton – October 26th to 28th
- Calgary – November 23rd to 25th

The instructor – a Mastery Grad herself!! – taught about 10-12 different moves on the pole and at the end of the night everyone got to be the star of their own show!

It is a dark, rainy, foggy night in the mountains.
As my car moves swiftly around the curves of the slippery roads I think about the faith we place on mans inventions and am thankful as my steering wheel moves me easily around each corner. The cliff looks scary as it is dark and steep and I wonder what it would be like to be stranded at the bottom taking my last breath.
How would I feel?
Sad. Mournful of the life I did not live and knew I could.
Why didn’t I?
What held me back?
I took all these courses, knew all these great things, even set up my finances so that I could be free of the day to day burdens. But everyday, I held on to them, and nurtured them and I am angry at myself for doing so.
Well it’s over.
That is it!
I am off to live the life I have always dreamed about!
I’m off to Paris, Spain, Italy, Greece, Egypt, New Zealand, Australia, and anywhere else my heart desires to go.

What a Ride! Submitted by Real men don’t cry
I must thank Larry, James and all the support staff at my Mastery. It has been an absolute life changing experience for me. Thank you as well to all my fellow participants for creating a safe and supportive environment for me to grow. A huge thanks as well to my wife for kicking my ass to even register.
My wife Tracy and I bought some land in Costa Rica almost a year ago, sight unseen on a referral from some friends. Part of the deposit process was that we were to come down to view the property, and if we preferred a different lot to the one we reserved, our deposit was fully transferable. I booked our flights under duress. I can’t take that much time off work to go look at something. Let’s just get this lot and wait for it to appreciate and deal with it later.
I booked our tickets to Costa Rica quite some time ago, without any attention as to when Mastery was. It worked out that Mastery ended the day before we left for Costa Rica. The timing could not have been better.
We arrived at the airport at 4:30 a.m., and I didn’t mind or whine even a little bit. Flights to Costa Rica involve a 6 hour layover in Dallas airport. We were able to wander around the airport and enjoy a nice leisurely lunch. Lunch has always been to fill a hole, not something to be enjoyed, so this was new for me. We then made our connector to San Jose, Costa Rica and arrived late. I was tired, but in great spirits with huge excitement for our puddle jumper flight the next day, to our future home.
We arrived in Palmar Sur the next day by lunch and were greeted by some of the most beautiful scenery I have ever seen. We took a cab to our hotel, and checked in to our cabina. It was a single room building with no amenities of any kind. (Including any water pressure in the showers, or hot water for that matter). The patio rail was all that divided our room from the rainforest though. It is so cool to stand on the patio and watch the hummingbirds and butterflies at 5 in the morning. It was recommended to us to not rent a vehicle while we were down there. We soon realized what a mistake that was. At this point in our travels, the only option available to us was to walk 4 km down the road to a rental shop and rent little tiny scooters. I am over 6 feet tall and 250 lbs. I don’t fit well on these silly little things. With little choice, and some coaxing from my wife, we decided to rent scooters. Prior to mastery, that would NOT have happened.
In the morning, our adventure began. We jump on these ridiculously undersized machines and roar up the highway to a surfer town at 40-50 km/hr. (50 on the downhills). On the way to Dominical, we saw a car pulled off to the side of the road and what I assume to be road kill. We pull over to see a woman trying to coax a 3-toed sloth to grab a branch so she can help him get across the road. If you have never seen a 3-toed sloth, they are the most disgusting filthy animals you will possibly ever encounter. EWWWW. They have the lovely aroma of a frightened skunk, they are absolutely covered with bugs and other crawlies, and between their shoulder blades the moss/fungus is so thick that they are green. They are also the cutest animal I have ever seen. After getting him in the ditch so he wouldn’t get run over, we lingered and took video of him crawling through the grass. God has a cruel sense of humor.
We continued on to Dominical and toured through the town. Dominical is a great little surf town right out of the movies. We wandered through the town and went into all kinds of little shops and interacted with locals as best as we could. Neither Tracy nor I speak any Spanish, and the locals speak very little English, so communication included a lot of pointing, grunting and laughing. What fun. We went to lunch in a little café recommended to us and had a fabulous meal. As we sat down, a dog came and lay under Tracy’s chair, and another lay just beside mine. Don’t see a lot of dogs in Canadian restaurants, so this struck us as hilarious. Some people sat beside us shortly after and must have had something really good because a dog came and laid his head on the woman’s lap and watched her eat the whole time.
A storm rolled in as we were finishing up and we debated whether or not to wait out the storm. Storms there usually last for an hour and the skies turn totally blue. We decided to brave the hour drive back. That turned out to be the correct choice. This particular storm was pulled in by Hurricane Felix and lasted till the next morning. We drove back in the shower warm rain laughing the entire time.
The next day was a field trip to Palmar Norte. Palmar Norte is a village of about 4000 people and is as far from a tourist place as you can imagine. We wandered through the town and were the only non Costa Ricans there. As we were rolling through town taking in the sights, we had local school children racing us down the streets. We then made our way over to main street to take is some shopping. (Tracy’s insistence, believe me). We wandered into various shops and had a blast with the locals. Trying to get sizes for various people back home, with such poor communication skills proved to be challenging, and great fun. I couldn’t figure out how much we owed at the last store, so the lady at the till had to pull the money out of the till so I could count it, and pay her accordingly.
That night, we were at the restaurant at the hotel relaxing when the waiters, Edgar and Eduardo, asked us if we wanted to go partying with them. We agreed wholeheartedly. I am sure we were invited as a direct result of our openness from mastery. At 9 that night, we piled into the back of his Honda Civic and went off into the night. Twenty minutes of 6 inch potholes, through the rainforest later, we pull into a little village. As we get out of the car, the walls of a bar are pounding and rocking. People are wandering around having a great time. Our hosts take us into a little bar and get us set up. We are now sitting in a Spanish Karaoke bar, with no one that speaks our language, nor us theirs.
Edgar and Tracy get up and start dancing. Tracy didn’t have a clue as to what Edgar was trying to show and teach her, but she could hardly stand up from laughing so hard. She was obviously enjoying herself and having a great time. A local came and bought me a beer and invited himself to sit with us. That conversation started out with him owning a horse riding business and him inviting us to his farm the next day. (I think) He then went on to tell me that he had 7 ponies and 2 full size horses. He then invited me to come to his farm to ride cows. At this point I suspected communication issues. Later, he invited me to come to his farm to ride his pig. This I was convinced was a communication issue, until he started to snort. Snorting is not lost in translation. Our hosts rescued us from the bar at this point, and I sadly lost the guys number to go pig riding.
The whole point of our trip was to go down and confirm our choice of lot and make arrangements to pay for it. After having seen and falling completely in love with the land, the PEOPLE, and our property, we decided to actually start the design process of our future home. We met with the local developers and are currently working with them to design OUR dream home. We are so completely excited about where our lives are going, and what the future holds for us.
My life is much fuller and more exciting for having taken Mastery. I have started on about 4 different dreams since Mastery, that once seemed to be hopeful someday wishes. The pursuit of those dreams has lost a lot of the fear and trepidation for me. Mastery has given me the knowledge and self confidence to take the challenges of achieving my lofty goals in stride. And more importantly, to do them while staying connected with my family. Life is now easy.

Gratitude
I’m sitting here in my almost completed renovated home (Many of you have heard me speak of it over the years, and yes, we are almost at the end – finally!) here in beautiful rainy Vancouver while my little angel sleeps upstairs and I am overcome with such a sense of gratitude for all that I have been blessed with. I have a relationship which nourishes me and gives me opportunities to grow every day :-) We now get to share in the daily learnings of our sweet daughter and to marvel at the perfection of the universe that brought such a miracle into our lives. I have a wonderful community of friends who support and challenge me on a daily basis. And I get to do work which I love and which fulfills me, where I am constantly in awe of the human spirit.
Much has changed in the Mastery community of Alberta in the last year, and I have many people to thank for keeping the Mastery spirit alive there “out east” :-)
At the beginning of the year, Paulette Squair, who was our enrollment goddess there in Calgary for the past few years after taking the reigns from Daniel Donaghy, passed on the position to Shilo Taylor. Thanks Paulette for your bright spark that you brought to the position.
Shilo, since taking on the position has done a wonderful job of bringing her excitement for the Mastery to the role and has been doing a terrific job, including an overflowing Mastery in August. Way to go Shilo!
Many of you had an opportunity to see the Master, Larry Gilman do his brilliant work at the Mastery in Calgary this summer and I must thank Larry for bringing his brilliance back to Alberta so I could spend time getting to know Olivia.
Alithea Davis brought her vision of an Alberta Mastery newsletter to life with several editions of a fun/creative place for us to keep in touch with one another. Since then, she has been busy in motherland herself and has passed the editorship on to Kelsey McKracken. Thanks for all your hard work Alithea.
Kelsey, in addition to being the newest member of the Alberta Back Row along with Rejeanne Mulliner, has taken on the responsibility for keeping the Alberta Mastery newsletter alive and has brought her own flair to the newsletter with a new look. Thanks Kelsey for all you’ve done to keep us connected.
We will be having an Edmonton Mastery this month greatly due to the commitment of a group of ladies from the North, Kim Deep, Lori Batshutski, Christie O. Mawer, Yvonne Rosenthal and Marianna Van Goh. I’m looking forward to getting back to Edmonton, so thank you ladies for all your hard work.
James Downie has done a fabulous job leading intros and running follow up meetings and by being a point person of leadership there in Alberta. Thank you James for all this, for being the person you are and for giving me such a shining example of what it is to live the Mastery every day.
So as you can see, I have so much and so many to be thankful for and to and I am grateful for an opportunity to express my gratitude.

I have missed seeing you all while I’ve been busy with new motherhood and can’t wait to reconnect this fall.

A month later -- or longer
How much of that indestructibility, that larger, fuller person is left? Are you just as confident in the world? Do your problems still seem as small?
If not, are you still in a Mastery group?
You know, the ones who witnessed, and understand, who you really are.
They saw you on Sunday night, without the masks and layers that hide your light from the world.
Without those reminders it is so easy to forget, to fall back into the old patterns.
After all, we have 15, 20 or 30 or more years of experience with those shells, even if we are now aware that they aren't so comfortable and often don't serve us.
It is time to take our lives to an edgier place --outside the comfortable "I know that". On to the edge.
And it is hard to get there without support.
If you are not in your original Mastery group -- join a new one. If not Mastery, than find a group that is truly willing to "see you" --the real you.
People who support the greatness that is each of us.
What is your Dharma - your mission -- on this planet? How many lives are you meant to touch, to change?
When we allow who we know we are (remember Sunday) to hide behind our old patterns, we rob ourselves, our family and friends, and the world of our magnificence.
Keep discovering, keep stretching. Let's make the Alberta Mastery community one of daring and doing and growing together.

The monologue can be a song that you sing or speak, a piece of poetry that you have written or someone else’s, a famous speech from a politician, religious leader, motivational speaker, or a movie. The piece you choose should have meaning to you. It should be significant to you personally. Once you have chosen your piece, memorize it! You will not have any musical accompaniment if you should choose a song.
